Zomato, an online food delivery behemoth, has announced a new and interesting feature aimed at increasing customer satisfaction while reducing food wastage. Called Food Rescue, the feature enables customers to buy cancelled orders at reduced rates. However, this option will not be offered to the original customer (who cancelled the order) or anyone in their neighbourhood. Furthermore, it will not apply to foods with short shelf lives, such as ice cream, shakes, and smoothies. -The cancelled order will show up on the app for customers who are located within three kilometres of the -delivery partner who has the order.

-The option to claim the order will only be available for a few minutes to preserve freshness.
-It is important to note that the original client (who placed the order) and people in their area will not be given the choice to claim the order.
-The new customer's payment will be shared with the previous customer (if they paid online) and the restaurant partner. Except for the necessary government taxes, Zomato will not retain any of the profits.
-Food Rescue will not apply to orders that include perishable items, such as shakes, smoothies, ice cream, or other things that are sensitive to temperature or distance. Moreover, non-vegetarian orders will not be displayed to customers who prefer vegetarian cuisine.

Talking about the new feature, Zomato’s CEO, Deepinder Goyal, said ‘We don't encourage order cancellation at Zomato, because it leads to a tremendous amount of food wastage. Inspite of stringent policies, and a no-refund policy for cancellations, more than 4 lakh perfectly good orders get cancelled on Zomato, for various reasons by customers. The top concern for us, the restaurant industry, and even the customers who cancel these orders is to somehow save the food from going to waste. Today, we are introducing a new feature (being scaled as we speak) – Food Rescue!'
