MWC 2019 was all about 5G, with Qualcomm leading the way. At the event, Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm Incorporated President, said that the company has preponed the rollout of the technology, and now, a few months later, the company has launched two chipsets declaring 5G will go mainstream in 2020. At its annual Snapdragon Summit, the chipmaker launched Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 5G and 765/765G 5G mobile platforms, which means that 5G will not be limited to the premium devices. The company also launched the Qualcomm 3D Sonic fingerprint technology.
‘5G will open new and exciting opportunities to connect, compute, and communicate in ways we’ve yet to imagine, and we are happy to be a key player driving the adoption of 5G around the world. Our Snapdragon 5G mobile platforms announced today will continue to show leadership in the industry and deliver on the promise of scaling 5G in 2020,’ Amon said in a statement. Alex Katouzian, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mobile, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., unveiled two new 5G Snapdragon mobile platforms.
The flagship Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform, which includes the Snapdragon X55 Modem-RF System, is for the flagship devices, and the Snapdragon 765/765G bring integrated 5G connectivity, AI processing, and select Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming experiences to affordable smartphones. The first carriers announcing the support of the certification program for Snapdragon Modular Platforms are Verizon and Vodafone, with more expected in 2020.
The Snapdragon 865 will not have a 5G modem integrated, which means that OEMs still have an option to develop phones with flagship processor sans 5G for countries that do not have the infrastructure to offer high-speed internet service. The processor can have Snapdragon X55 modem and the RF modules installed separately to provide 5G services. The Snapdragon 865 is claimed to deliver 8K video recording at 30 frames per second.
When it comes to the Snapdragon 765 and 765G, these chipsets will have a new Snapdragon X52 5G modem integrated into them. These mid-tier chipsets also come with Qualcomm’s 5th-gen AI Engine, which is claimed to be 2X faster than the one on the last year’s Snapdragon 855 flagship.
Katouzian also announced 3D Sonic Max, the latest version of our ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. 3D Sonic Max offers a recognition area that is 17 times larger than the previous generation, allowing for increased security via simultaneous two-finger authentication, increased speed and ease of use.
