Qualcomm has announced Snapdragon 720G, Snapdragon 662 and Snapdragon 460 4G chipsets for mid-range and affordable smartphones. The company says that these platforms will deliver advanced connectivity....

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. has launched three new 4G mobile platforms: the Snapdragon 720G, Snapdragon 662 and Snapdragon 460, which will enable enhanced user experiences across connectivity, gaming and entertainment in mid-range and affordable devices. These chipsets are equipped with Qualcomm AI Engine & Qualcomm Sensing Hub, and are claimed to deliver an improved AI user experience across photography, voice assistants, and virtually always-on scenarios for increased contextual awareness.

‘While we see a fast adoption of 5G across geographies globally, we do recognise the boost that 4G has given towards enabling broadband connectivity for Indian consumers. 4G will continue to remain a focus area for Qualcomm Technologies for regions like India, where it will stay a key technology for connectivity,’ Rajen Vagadia, Vice President and President, Qualcomm India Pvt. Ltd, said in a statement.

Further, the new platforms also deliver key Wi-Fi 6 features and integrated Bluetooth 5.1 with advanced audio via the Qualcomm FastConnect 6-series subsystems and support Dual-Frequency (L1 and L5) GNSS to improve location positioning accuracy and robustness. They are also the first system-on-chip (SoC) solutions to support Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC). These solutions were first shown at the India Mobile Congress last year. NavIC is aimed at accelerating the adoption of NavIC and enhance the geolocation capabilities of mobile, automotive and the Internet of Things (IoT) solutions.

ISRO Qualcomm

“ISRO is satisfied with the efforts of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. towards incorporating NavIC and we urge OEMs to leverage it for future handset launches in India. The availability of NavIC across multiple mobile platforms will help enhance the geolocation capabilities of smartphones in the region and bring the benefits of this indigenous solution to Indian consumers for their day-to-day use,’ added ISRO Chairman Dr. K Sivan.

For the first time on mobile, the Qualcomm Location Suite now supports up to seven satellite constellations concurrently, including the use of all of NavIC’s operating satellites for more accurate location performance, faster time-to-first-fix (TTFF) position acquisition, and improved robustness of location-based services.

Snapdragon 720G

Snapdragon 720G comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming features to deliver smooth HDR game play, dynamic colour range and contrast, realistic and immersive in-game environments, and high-quality, synchronised sound with Qualcomm aptX Adaptive. It also has Qualcomm Spectra 350L ISP that enables the smartphone cameras to capture 4K video or snap massive 192MP photos. Snapdragon 720G also features the latest 5th generation Qualcomm AI Engine with the improved Qualcomm Hexagon Tensor Accelerator that enables AI experiences for gaming, photography, voice assistants, and virtually always-on contextual awareness. Snapdragon 720G features the Snapdragon X15 LTE modem.

Snapdragon 662

Snapdragon 662 brings camera and AI capabilities to the 6-series for the first time. It features Qualcomm Spectra 340T, which supports triple camera configurations and smooth switching between them — a first in the 6-series. The ISP supports photo capture in the HEIF file format. The addition of the 3rd generation Qualcomm AI Engine with Hexagon Vector Extensions and the Qualcomm Spectra 340T enable AI-based user experiences such as avatars, night photography, and face and voice authentication. Snapdragon 662 also features the new Snapdragon X11 LTE modem.

Snapdragon 460

Snapdragon 460 also gets performance boost across connectivity, AI and camera. Qualcomm says that the chipset’s performance CPU cores and an updated GPU architecture deliver up to 70 per cent (compared to Snapdragon 450 SoC) and 60 per cent (compared to Qualcomm Adreno 506 GPU) increase in performance, respectively. Overall it is claimed to deliver a 2x performance as compared the previous generation. For the first time, Hexagon processor with Qualcomm Hexagon Vector eXtensions (HVX) has been introduced into the 4-series, thereby equipping it with a 3rd generation Qualcomm AI Engine and the Qualcomm Sensing Hub for new AI photography and voice assistance. It comes with an integrated Snapdragon X11 LTE modem.
