A couple of months ago the first batch of 5G capable smartphones were being introduced and as of end of October, the number of 5G phones released in 2019 exceeded 20. While 5G will go mainstream in 2020, leading Android brands are keen on the adoption of 5G in their premium models. One such brand is HMD Global owned Nokia. The company is said to be working on a new Nokia 8.2 smartphone which will come with 5G capabilities.

While the Nokia 8.2 was earlier reported to come in two variants – one 4G LTE edition and other 5G variant, however, a new report claims that the Nokia 8.2 will only arrive in 5G version and will be launched in Mobile World Congress 2020 in Barcelona, Spain.

The Nokia 8.2 5G will come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 735 chipset which will succeed the Snapdragon 730 processor. The smartphone is expected to come in three variants -- 4GB of RAM with 64GB of storage, 6GB of RAM with 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM with 256GB of storage. The Nokia 8.2 will also be the first smartphone from the company’s stable to come with 8GB RAM.

For mobile photography, the Nokia 8.2 will sport a quad-camera setup with a 64MP primary sensor and will also for the time sport a 32MP pop-up selfie camera based on the Samsung’s GD1 image sensor with Quad-Bayer pixel-binning technology.

According to Counterpoint Research, the smartphone market in 2020 will benefit from the escalating competition among major platform providers, as well as the support of 5G connectivity in mid-end segments. And thanks to the availability of more affordable 5G smartphones, the global smartphone market is expected to get back on the growth track in the first half of 2020.

Over 200 million 5G smartphones will be shipped in 2020, representing a mid-double-digit 5G penetration.
