The Honor 6X makes dual lens smartphone an affordable affair for shutterbugs on a budget. But, does it deliver as promised?
With a zillion new products coming to the market one after the other, it’s really hard to keep tabs on the ones that truly matter. But, like they say, the cream always rises to that top, and so is the case with the new Honor 6X. It is your average smartphone – if you can say so – that has a decent software and is priced quite well. However, the USP of this phone lies in the fact that it features a dual-lens camera among other key highlights. So, is it all just a gimmick or the 6X really stands out?
The main highlight of the 6X is its dual lens camera that comprises a 12MP and 2MP lens. For the uninitiated, the benefit of having a dual lens camera is that it allows for faster focus and a greater depth of field. And it kind of shows in the pictures taken from the 6X. The image quality is quite impressive, I have to say. As you can see in the pictures (right), they aren’t pixelated and the colours are very sharp. What I really love about its camera is its quick response time and detailed picture quality. The phone also comes with a raft of photo editing tools that have some really cool features – you can say bye-bye to Instagram and Snapseed filters, really. There’s an 8MP front camera for the self(ie)-obsessed, too, which also produces decent images.
Among other highlights, the 5.5-inch Full HD screen is sharp and offers lively visuals. As far as its innards go, the 6X is available in two specs – 3GB RAM/34GB or 4GB RAM/64 internal storage and comes powered by a Kirin 655 octa-core processor (4 cores clocked @ 2.1GHz and other 4 @ 1.7GHz). I was using the 4GB spec for this review. From what I can tell, multitasking was a breeze without any real issues. Having said that, it does tend to lag sometimes under heavy use, however, it never hangs or overheats.
Complaints? The 6X could do with a better battery life and build quality needs to improve as well. Also, it still runs old Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) instead of Android 7.0 (Nougat) – albeit, it’s expected to receive the latest firmware update soon.
Overall, the Honor 6X is a great bargain for what it offers at the price. I think it’s a great budget phone for shutterbugs.
