While some saw it coming, others were surprised. After becoming the top most downloaded social media app in India, TikTok has now achieved one billion installs on Google Play globally. This can be attributed to the lockdown imposed by several nations owing to the Coronavirus outbreak. We cannot tell you the overall number, including installs on the App Store because Apple doesn’t release such data.
TikTok gained popularity in March globally, with 65 million worldwide downloads in the month, analytics site SensorTower reported recently. DataReportal claimed that the app had 800 million users in January and was quickly nearing a billion users. The development was first spotted by Android Police.
While people remain at home, they are in dire need of entertainment. Recent reports have suggested that people have started using social media and video streaming so much so that the companies had to reduce the maximum video resolution to 480p. TikTok is a source of endless entertainment, and it has also taken measures to reduce bandwidth consumption.
TikTok has seen its share of controversies, but it still remains one of the favourite apps amongst the young generation for content creation and consumption. This has led tech giants like Google and Facebook Inc to develop their own similar platforms. Meanwhile, other platforms like Zoom and Google Duo have registered an increase in usage. Dating apps haven’t seen a considerable increase or decrease in usage.
